Durban International Airport (DUR)
Airport Information

(Durban, South Africa)

THIS AIRPORT CLOSED IN APRIL 2010

Located 17 km / 11 miles to the south-west of downtown Durban and close to both Isipingo and Umlazi, the recently upgraded Durban International Airport (DUR) lies within South Africa's province of KwaZulu-Natal. Just minutes from the shoreline and the city's busy port, Durban Airport is also near to Malukaza, Pietermaritzburg, Shalcross and the Umlaas River, and handles over two million passengers per year from destinations worldwide, with around 45,0000 movements.

International, regional, domestic and charter flights fly to and from Durban International via major airlines, while many other flights are handled by the larger Johannesburg Airport. The one terminal at Durban Airport is always at its busiest during the peak of the holiday season, from the middle of December to the end of January, when accommodation soon becomes scarce and at a premium.

There are several shuttle services, which operate between Durban International Airport and the city itself, running throughout the day. Coach services are available and include Cheetah Coaches, while hotel shuttles and taxicabs are also in abundance, linking central districts, game parks and beach resorts, such as Battery Beach, North Beach and South Beach.

About Durban Tourism

Located on the east coast of South Africa and within the KwaZulu-Natal area, Durban has become a popular holiday and business destination. With countless museums, theatres and galleries, places of interest in Durban include the Art-Deco style Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World, rugby and football matches at the historic Kings Park Stadium, and the enormous uShaka Marine World, which is actually the world's fifth-biggest aquarium attraction and home to everything from large sharks to friendly dolphins.

Durban Airport (DUR) is used by both tourists and businessmen, who arrive here to soak up the sun on the city's fantastic 'Golden Mile' of sandy beaches, and to make use of the extensive facilities at the leading International Convention Centre (ICC). In addition to the many beaches are the spectacular KwaZulu-Natal's game parks and the surrounding lush countryside.
